History making Tala Lee-Turton who is only the third ever British female to graduate from the world-famous Bolshoi Ballet Academy is on tour in UK with Russian State Ballet and Opera House.
Tala discovered Russian training at the age of 14 when she was coached by Chika Temma and Yury Demakov of Bristol Russian Ballet School, and from then on, she focused all her training on the audition for the Bolshoi. Tala secured a place at the elite Moscow-based academy when she was just 16 years old in 2012.
Moving away from home and family and adapting to a new culture was a huge change for then 16-year-old Tala. But her determination to succeed shone through and she flourished under the guidance of the professionals at the Bolshoi – which has been producing world-class dancers since 1773, including the renowned Maya Plisetskaya, and one of Tala’s ballet heroines, Natalia Osipova.
Soon after graduating last year, Tala went on to secure a coveted place at the Astrakhan State Opera and Ballet Theatre. She is now one of a select group of British dancers who has made the transition from student to professional in Russia, with a job at one of the prestigious state-funded classical ballet companies.
Tala added: “I’m so excited to be given this fantastic opportunity to perform across the UK – the first time I’m performing so close to home as a professional dancer so it’s going to be extra special, particularly being able to
perform in Yorkshire. It will be the first time that many of my friends and family will have been able to see me dance as a professional.”
I caught up with Tala back stage and found out some interesting facts about her.
What makes you jump out of your bed every morning?
The thought that I might miss the potential of the day.
What is your favourite role to dance to this moment?
Probably Neapolitan, Swan Lake.
Legend of Love or Spartacus.
If you could dance anywhere in the world (not just theatre) where would it be?
If I had the money and resources, I’d set up a stage in the British woodlands and put on a suitably atmospheric fairy-tale ballet, something of my own imagining, a bit creepy like all the best fairy tales!
Best bits about England?
There’s so much that’s great about the UK! Of course, I’d say the county of Yorkshire is the jewel in our crown since it’s my home. But it’s more than that: the Yorkshire people are the warmest and most down to earth than anywhere else.
Tell us something about yourself that no one knows.
I think I’m transparent…everyone knows I also love films…but maybe they don’t know I’m also a tennis fan!
How do you relax after performance?
Favourite Ballet dancer?
Natalia Osipova and Sylvie Guillem.
If you could take anyone to dinner who would you take?
What’s your life motto?
Don’t give up.
